Nick Barnes "Mr. Untouchable" Drug Lord

Nick Barnes "Mr. Untouchable" - Read Below

"Mr. Untouchable", a documentary on Harlem drug kingpin Leroy "Nicky" Barnes, will be released on DVD on Tuesday.

There are various comparisons between "Mr. Untouchable" and "American Gangster". "Mr. Untouchable" came out in the theaters Oct. 26, while its counterpart "American Gangster" was released on Nov. 2.

"Mr. Untouchable" was produced by Damon Dash, a Harlem native and former CEO of Roc-A-Fella Records. Rapper Jay-Z, Dash's former business partner, made an album inspired by the movie "American Gangster" and titled it with the same name.

While the large-scale "American Gangster", which starred Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, told the story of Frank Lucas, "Mr. Untouchable" was a documentary that spoke directly to Barnes and his experiences.

Like Lucas, Barnes was a heavy kingpin of heroin in Harlem in the 1970s after the 1968 death of the legendary Harlem crime boss Bumpy Johnson, who was portrayed in "American Gangster" and the movie "Hoodlum". For Lucas, Johnson was a mentor yet was a competitor to Barnes.

Barnes was portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in "American Gangster", but Barnes was not content with the script nor Gooding's performance and was compelled to be apart of the documentary, which was directed by Marc Levin.

In his heyday, Barnes created The Council, an organization of Harlem's heroin dealers in order to consolidate their zoned areas. Lucas vehemently declined Barnes' invitation and the two became competitors.

Barnes wound up on the cover of the New York Times Magazine and was dubbed "Mr. Untouchable" for his ability to beat any charges brought against him. However, he was brought down by the DEA and entered the Witness Protection Program after giving up names.

Prior to "American Gangster", Barnes was the most well-known drug kingpin of his era. However, after a lifestyle of wealth, fame and flashiness, Barnes has been relegated to being referred to many as a "snitch" due to his entry into the program.

The producers arranged a phone conversation between the two former kingpins, which is included as an extra on the DVD. While many expected them to be angry or spiteful, the two were very cordial and showed a lot of mutual respect towards each other.

As for being a vet at 10, Oliver says, “Might as get it done early as get it done late.”

“The first day it kind of made me nervous. But I’m like, ‘When can I do that?’ It doesn’t really scare me because we have blood. Why be scared of it?” she added.

“Always been so bright, very, very smart actually. We quiz her quite often here,” Shoemaker says.

Ines Gomez proposes to Tom Brady

Hot News - Ines Gomez proposes to Tom Brady- Read Below

Ines Gomez-Mont is a reporter from TV Azteca and as NFL Media day goes she gets to ask questions right along with reporters from ESPN and the NFL Network. And the adorable Mexican reporter wasn't concerned about Tom Brady's ankle she was more concerned about his wedding finger, and likely other parts of the Brady anatomy as well. So much so that she wore a wedding dress to the event and had a marriage proposal for Brady.

Tom Brady was as cool as ever. While the woman held up a t-shirt that said the "Real Miss Brady" (Wait - wouldn't that be the real Mrs. Brady) she begged Tom to marry her and told him that she "loved him". I wish I was kidding, she really did beg.

She asked him over and over to make her "Miss Brady" and Tom calmed her down and asked her what her name was. When she said Ines Brady gave his best "aw shucks" smile and told her it was a beautiful name. Tom then claimed that he had a few "Miss Brady's" in his life. Later he would confess that he is a "one-woman man." Gisele is probably very happy about that.

The video exchange is here at AOL Sports. Later the reporter would even quiz head coach Bill Belichick if she was "better" than Brady's supermodel girlfriend Gisele Bundchen. "I wouldn't go that far," the coach deadpanned.

Rare Dolphin Beaten to Death By Fishermen

Volcanic Topic: Rare Dolphin Beaten to Death - Read Below

An extremely rare river dolphin has been beaten to death by fishermen in southern Bangladesh, the state-run BSS news agency said Tuesday.

Fishermen at Mongla, near the Sunderbans mangrove forest, netted a Ganges river dolphin on Monday and beat it to death as they had not seen this kind of creature before, the report said.

A group then tried to sell it as a rare fish, before giving up and dumping it outside a museum.

The Sunderbans area straddles the borders of Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal state and lies on the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are just 1 200 to 1 800 such dolphins alive.

Margaret Truman Daniel Dies At The AGE of 83

Margaret Truman Daniel Dies - Read Below

Margaret Truman Daniel, the only child of former U.S. President Harry S. Truman and the author of 32 books, including a biography of her mother Bess, died today. She was 83.

Daniel died in Chicago after a brief illness, according to a news release posted on the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum's Web site. She was a longtime resident of New York.

Her books included a 1956 memoir of her early life, ``Souvenir: Margaret Truman's Own Story,'' as well as the 1986 biography, ``Bess W. Truman.'' She also wrote 23 novels in a series called ``Capital Crimes,'' including ``Murder in the White House'' and ``Murder at the National Cathedral.''

In a 2005 book about the White House, ``The President's House: 1800 to the Present,'' Daniel reflected on her own personal experience in the pinnacle of American power and prestige.

``I have lived in several houses and apartments, and spent some time in splendid establishments, including a few royal palaces,'' she wrote. ``But not one of them -- nor all of them together -- can compare to the feeling I recalled from my White House days.''

Yet her eldest son, Clifton Truman Daniel, wrote in his 1995 memoir that his mother also harbored darker feelings about Washington politics.

``My mother seems to have a strong opinion, often bad, of almost everyone in Washington,'' he wrote. ``That's why she writes those murder mysteries; so she can kill them off, one at a time.''

Protecting Legacy

Margaret Daniel protected her famous father's legacy, sometimes fiercely. In a 1992 interview on NBC's ``Today,'' she took issue with how President George H.W. Bush, a Republican, sometimes compared himself to Truman, a Democrat.

``The major difference is night and day, my father being day and George Bush being night,'' she said. ``My father looked on the presidency as a very historic and honorable job that should be done to the best of his ability.''

In her 1986 book, Daniel said her mother Bess struggled to adjust to life in the White House after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt elevated Truman to the presidency. Daniel wrote that her mother felt ``a smoldering anger that was tantamount to emotional separation.''

Daniel helped arrange ceremonies in 1995 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the start of the Truman presidency and last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Truman Library.

Presidential History

A devotee of presidential history, she served as honorary co-chair of the Truman Library's nonprofit institute and a governing board member of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute.

``Her legacy is as much a part of this presidential library as her parents', and we are extremely grateful for her many contributions,'' Michael Devine, director of the Truman Library, said in a statement.

Mary Margaret Truman was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Independence, Missouri. She graduated from George Washington University in 1946, one year after her father became president in the final months of World War II.

Before writing, she pursued a career as a singer, performing at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1949

When her father left the White House at the start of 1953, Daniel moved to New York to work for the National Broadcasting Co., which had signed her in 1951. In 1955, filling in for Edward R. Murrow on his TV show ``Person to Person,'' Daniel interviewed her parents in their Independence home.

She married Clifton Daniel, then assistant to the foreign news editor of the New York Times, in 1956. He would go on to serve as the newspaper's managing editor from 1964 to 1969. He died in 2000.

The couple had four children, three of whom survive her.

Florida Elections Today

Florida Voting Today- Read Below

Polls opened at 7AM this morning and close at 8PM. Winner will take all 57 delegates up for grab in the Sunshine State Republican primary. Democrats have no delegates up at stake, due to the Florida Democratic party’s decision to hold the primary early. A relatively high turnout is expected, with more than a million ballots already having been cast.

Mitt Romney and John McCain find themselves neck-and-neck for first place. Things don’t look so good for Rudy Giuliani, who essentially banked his entire campaign on the Sunshine State. Should he finish third, we may see him dropping out before Super Tuesday.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Found To Be Havin Another

Hot News: Carmen Slowsky, Mayor Kilpatrick's New Lady - Read Below

Reports that Kwame Kilpatrick had a woman other than his wife with him at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C., before speaking at the Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast left event organizers disappointed Friday.
The embattled Detroit Mayor and scandal extraordinaire was reportedly in the western North Carolina city with some woman named Carmen Slowsky.
Reportedly, Kwame Kilpatrick and Carmen Slowsky had champagne and a whirlpool bath together at a cost of more than $500.
A copy of the hotel invoice shows a stay arranged for two. A prosecutor in Michigan launched an investigation Friday into allegations that Kilpatrick lied under oath about an affair with top aide Christine Beatty.

Kwame Kilpatrick is married, and news of a scandalous extramarital affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, had surfaced in Detroit recently.
Kilpatrick has said the affair was over, but the political damage lingers.
Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy said she picked Kwame Kilpatrick up at the airport, saw him at the breakfast and again at dinner, and he was alone each time. But questions about Carmen Slowsky continue to dog the mayor.
“It’s very disappointing to have this happen,” she said. “Kwame Kilpatrick’s speech was a chance to energize the community around mentoring and tutoring our youth. The event was meant to focus on Dr. King’s legacy and now the focus is this.”

Asteroid to Pass By Earth Tonight

Asteroid On The Way Tonight - Read Below

LOS ANGELES -- Space watchers were set for a rare treat on Tuesday after US space authorities released pictures of a huge asteroid they said would zoom past Earth within sight of amateur telescopes.

The asteroid fly-by "is the closest until at least the end of the next century," said Steve Ostro, a senior astronomer at the space agency NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.

"It is also the asteroid's closest Earth approach for more than 2,000 years," he added, after the laboratory used high-resolution radar data to produce an image of the hulking asymmetrical object.

Roughly 250 meters in diameter, asteroid 2007 TU24 would inflict devastating regional damage were it to hit Earth, but NASA said there is no risk of a collision.

It was due to pass within 538,000 kilometers (334,000 miles) of Earth just after 0830 GMT.

"For a brief time the asteroid will be observable in dark and clear skies with amateur telescopes of three inches [7.5 centimeters] or larger," NASA said earlier.

Bush's Final State of The Union Address

Full Text of Bush's State of The Union Address - Read Below

Madam Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:

Seven years have passed since I first stood before you at this rostrum. In that time, our country has been tested in ways none of us could have imagined. We have faced hard decisions about peace and war, rising competition in the world economy, and the health and welfare of our citizens. These issues call for vigorous debate, and I think it's fair to say we've answered that call. Yet history will record that amid our differences, we acted with purpose. And together, we showed the world the power and resilience of American self-government.

All of us were sent to Washington to carry out the people's business. That is the purpose of this body. It is the meaning of our oath. And it remains our charge to keep.

The actions of the 110th Congress will affect the security and prosperity of our Nation long after this session has ended. In this election year, let us show our fellow Americans that we recognize our responsibilities and are determined to meet them. And let us show them that Republicans and Democrats can compete for votes and cooperate for results at the same time.

From expanding opportunity to protecting our country, we have made good progress. Yet we have unfinished business before us, and the American people expect us to get it done.

In the work ahead, we must be guided by the philosophy that made our Nation great. As Americans, we believe in the power of individuals to determine their destiny and shape the course of history. We believe that the most reliable guide for our country is the collective wisdom of ordinary citizens. So in all we do, we must trust in the ability of free people to make wise decisions, and empower them to improve their lives and their futures.

To build a prosperous future, we must trust people with their own money and empower them to grow our economy. As we meet tonight, our economy is undergoing a period of uncertainty. America has added jobs for a record 52 straight months, but jobs are now growing at a slower pace. Wages are up, but so are prices for food and gas. Exports are rising, but the housing market has declined. And at kitchen tables across our country, there is concern about our economic future.

In the long run, Americans can be confident about our economic growth. But in the short run, we can all see that growth is slowing. So last week, my Administration reached agreement with Speaker Pelosi and Republican Leader Boehner on a robust growth package that includes tax relief for individuals and families and incentives for business investment. The temptation will be to load up the bill. That would delay it or derail it, and neither option is acceptable. This is a good agreement that will keep our economy growing and our people working. And this Congress must pass it as soon as possible.

We have other work to do on taxes. Unless the Congress acts, most of the tax relief we have delivered over the past 7 years will be taken away. Some in Washington argue that letting tax relief expire is not a tax increase. Try explaining that to 116 million American taxpayers who would see their taxes rise by an average of $1,800. Others have said they would personally be happy to pay higher taxes. I welcome their enthusiasm, and I am pleased to report that the IRS accepts both checks and money orders.

Most Americans think their taxes are high enough. With all the other pressures on their finances, American families should not have to worry about the Federal Government taking a bigger bite out of their paychecks. There is only one way to eliminate this uncertainty: make the tax relief permanent. And Members of Congress should know: If any bill raising taxes reaches my desk, I will veto it.

Just as we trust Americans with their own money, we need to earn their trust by spending their tax dollars wisely. Next week, I will send you a budget that terminates or substantially reduces 151 wasteful or bloated programs totaling more than $18 billion. And this budget will keep America on track for a surplus in 2012. American families have to balance their budgets, and so should their Government.

The people's trust in their Government is undermined by congressional earmarks — special interest projects that are often snuck in at the last minute, without discussion or debate. Last year, I asked you to voluntarily cut the number and cost of earmarks in half. I also asked you to stop slipping earmarks into committee reports that never even come to a vote. Unfortunately, neither goal was met. So this time, if you send me an appropriations bill that does not cut the number and cost of earmarks in half, I will send it back to you with my veto. And tomorrow, I will issue an Executive Order that directs Federal agencies to ignore any future earmark that is not voted on by the Congress. If these items are truly worth funding, the Congress should debate them in the open and hold a public vote.

Our shared responsibilities extend beyond matters of taxes and spending.

Kathleen Sebelius Delivered Democratic Response to the State of The Union

Kansas Governer Sibelius says Long Term Economy Stimulus Needed- Read Below

Kathleen Sebelius, the Governor of Kansas, delivered her response to the State Of The Union Speech by president George Bush. Text of Democratic response to State of the Union address, by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Prepared text of the Democratic response to the State of the Union address delivered Monday by the Governor of Kansas Kathleen Sebelius, as provided by her office.

I'm Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of the State of Kansas.

And I am grateful for the opportunity to speak with you tonight.

I'm a Democrat, but tonight, it really doesn't matter whether you think of yourself as a Democrat, or a Republican,or an independent, or none of the above.

Instead, the fact you're tuning in this evening tells me each of you is, above all an American, first.

You are mothers and fathers. Grandparents and grandchildren. Working people and business-owners. Americans all.

And the American people -- folks like you, and me -- are not nearly as divided as our rancorous politics might suggest.

In fact, right now, tonight, as political pundits discuss the President's speech -- chances are, they'll obsess over the reactions of members of Congress.

"How many times was the President interrupted by applause? Did Republicans stand? Did Democrats sit?"

And the rest of us will roll our eyes and think, "What in the world does any of that have to do with me?"

And, so, I want to take a slight detour from tradition on this State of the Union night.

In this time, normally reserved for the partisan response, I hope to offer you something more: An American response.

A national call to action on behalf of the struggling families in the heartland and across this great country. A wake-up call to Washington -- on behalf of a new American majority -- that time is running out on our opportunities to meet our challenges and solve our problems.

Our struggling economy requires urgent and immediate action, and then sustained attention. Families can't pay their bills. They are losing their jobs, and now are threatened with losing their homes.

We heard last week and again tonight that Congress and the president are acting quickly, on a temporary, targeted stimulus package. That is encouraging. But you and I know that a temporary fix is only the first step toward meeting our challenges and solving our problems.

There is a chance Mr. President, in the next 357 days, to get real results, and give the American people renewed optimism that their challenges are the top priority. Working together, working hard, committing to results, we can get the job done.

In fact, over the last year, the Democratic majority in Congress has begun to move us in the right direction -- with bipartisan action to strengthen our national security, raise the minimum wage and reduce the costs of college loans.

These are encouraging first steps. But there is still more to be done.

And, so we ask you, Mr. President -- will you join us? Let's get to work.

We know that we are stronger as a nation when our people have access to the highest quality, most affordable health care. When our businesses can compete in the global marketplace without the burden of rising health care costs here at home.

We know that caring for our children, so they have a healthy and better start in life, is what grownups do. Governors in both parties, and a large majority of the Congress are ready, right now, to provide health care to 10 million American children, as a first step in overhauling our health care system.

Join us, Mr. President, sign the bill and let's get to work.

Sitting with the first lady tonight was Steve Hewitt, the city manager of Greensburg, Kan. Many of you remember Greensburg -- our town nearly destroyed by a tornado last year.

Thanks to Steve's efforts, and hundreds of others in our state, and across the country, Greensburg will recover. Folks rolled up their sleeves and got to work, and local, state and federal governments assisted in the effort.

But more than just recover -- the Kansans who live in Greensburg are building green -- rebuilding a better community for their children and grandchildren; making shared sacrifices, and investments for the next generation.

Greensburg is not alone. You and I stand ready -- ready to protect our environment for future generations and stay economically competitive. Mayors have committed their cities to going green; governors have joined together, leading efforts for energy security and independence; and the majority in Congress is ready to tackle the challenge of reducing global warming and creating a new energy future for America.

So we ask you, Mr. President, will you join us? It's time to get to work.

Here in the heartland, we honor and respect military service. We appreciate the enormous sacrifices made by soldiers and their families.

As governor of Kansas, I am the commander in chief of our National Guard. Over the past five years, I have seen thousands of soldiers deployed from Kansas. I've visited our troops in Iraq; attended funerals and comforted families; and seen the impact at home of the war being waged.

We stand ready in the heartland and across this country, to join forces with peace-loving nations across the globe and to fight the war against terrorists, wherever they may strike. But our capable and dedicated soldiers can't solve the political disputes where they are, and can't focus on the real enemies elsewhere.

The new Democratic majority of Congress and the vast majority of Americans are ready -- ready to chart a new course. If more Republicans in Congress stand with us this year, we won't have to wait for a new President to restore America's role in the world, and fight a more effective war on terror.

The last five years have cost us dearly -- in lives lost; in thousands of wounded warriors whose futures may never be the same; in challenges not met here at home because our resources were committed elsewhere. America's foreign policy has left us with fewer allies and more enemies.

Join us, Mr. President, and working together with Congress to make tough, smart decisions; we will regain our standing in the world and protect our people and our interests.

I know government can work to benefit the people we serve, because I see it every day, not only here in Kansas, but in states across the country. I know government can work, Mr. President, because like you, I grew up in a family committed to public service. My father and my father-in-law both served in Congress -- one a Republican and one a Democrat. They had far more in common than the issues that divided them -- a love for their country that led them from military service to public service. A lifetime of working for the common good, making sacrifices so their children and grandchildren could have a better future.

They are called "the Greatest Generation." But I believe, like parents across America, that our greatest generations are still to come. That we must chart a new course, at home and abroad, to give our future greatest generations all the opportunities our parents gave us.

These are uncertain times, but with strength and determination, we can meet the challenges together. If Washington can work together, so quickly, on a short-term fix for families caught in the financial squeeze, then we can work together to transform America.

In these difficult times -- the American people aren't afraid to face difficult choices.

But, we have no more patience for divisive politics.

Tonight's address begins the final year of this presidency, with new leaders on the horizon and uncertainty throughout our land. Conditions we face, at home and abroad, are results of choices made and challenges unmet.

In spite of the attempts to convince us that we are divided as a people, a new American majority has come together. We are tired of leaders who rather than asking what we can do for our country, ask nothing of us at all.

We are Americans sharing a belief in something greater than ourselves, a nation coming together to meet challenges and find solutions; to share sacrifices and share prosperity; and focus, once again, not only on the individual good but on the common good.

On behalf of the new American majority -- the majority of elected officials at the national, state and local level, and the majority of Americans, we ask you, Mr. President, to join us. We are ready to work together, to be the America we have been -- and can be once again.

Thank you for listening. God bless and sleep well. And in the morning, let's get to work.

Ted Kennedy to Endorse Barack Obama

Hot News - Ted Kennedy Expected to Endorse Obama

WASHINGTON — Senator Edward M. Kennedy implored Americans on Monday to “reject the counsels of doubt and calculation,” as he extended his endorsement and placed the aura of his family’s name around the presidential candidacy of Senator Barack Obama.

“It is time again for a new generation of leadership,” Mr. Kennedy said, speaking over a crowd of cheering supporters here at American University. “It is time now for Barack Obama.”

Mr. Kennedy promised to campaign aggressively for Mr. Obama, a strong endorsement from a veteran Democratic leader that might influence some in the party’s liberal Democratic base torn between Mr. Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“We, too, want a president who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American dream and those around the world who still believe in the American ideal and who can lift our spirits and make us believe again,” Mr. Kennedy said. “I’ve found that candidate and I think you have, too.”

He praised Mrs. Clinton and the third Democratic candidate, John Edwards. “They are my friends, they are my friends, they have been my colleagues in the Senate,” Mr. Kennedy said. “Whoever is our nominee will have my enthusiastic support.”

But he said one candidate had risen above the rest. “He understands what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the fierce urgency of now,” said Mr. Kennedy, who was joined on stage by his niece, Caroline Kennedy, and her cousin, Representative Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island, who are also backing Mr. Obama.

“I stand here today with a great deal of humility,” Mr. Obama said after Mr. Kennedy’s endorsement. “I know what your support means. I know the cherished place the Kennedy family holds in the hearts of the American people.”

In a 20-minute address, Mr. Kennedy spoke effusively of Mr. Obama, who has served with him in the Senate for three years. He hailed his ability to transcend race in America, saying Mr. Obama’s candidacy could set the nation on a new course of reconciliation.

Mr. Kennedy, who associates said had grown furious at the tone of the presidential campaign, including the words and actions of former President Bill Clinton, said Mr. Obama would usher in a new era of politics. His speech was filled with references to his distaste for the bitterness and lack of bipartisanship that has infiltrated Washington.

“He will be a president who refuses to be trapped in the patterns of the past,” Mr. Kennedy said. “He is a leader who sees the world clearly without being cynical. He is a fighter who cares passionately about the causes he believes in, without demonizing those who hold a different view.”

Mr. Kennedy, whose endorsement was aggressively pursued by all the Democratic candidates, praised Mr. Obama’s ability to motivate a new generation of leaders. Not since his brothers, Mr. Kennedy said, has he seen a politician possess the ability to inspire.

“With Barack Obama, there is a new national leader who has given America a different kind of campaign — not just about himself, but about all of us,” Mr. Kennedy said. “A campaign about the country we will become, if we can rise above the old politics that parses us into separate groups and puts us at odds with one another.”

Mr. Kennedy is expected to head west with Mr. Obama, followed by appearances in the Northeast. Strategists see him bolstering Mr. Obama’s credibility and helping him firm up support from unions and Hispanics, as well as the party base.

Mrs. Clinton and her allies had pressed Senator Kennedy to remain neutral in the Democratic race, as he traditionally has done. Instead, the endorsement gave Mr. Obama the Kennedy charisma and connections before the 22-state showdown for the Democratic nomination on Feb. 5.

Mr. Kennedy, who called Mr. Clinton Sunday to tell him of his decision, remained uncertain of his decision as late as the middle of last week. But, according to allies, when he learned that his niece’s endorsement would appear as an Op-Ed piece in The New York Times on Sunday, he decided to bolster that with his own public embrace of the campaign at a joint rally at American University.

Trying to dilute the impact of the twin endorsements by the brother and daughter of the late president, the Clinton campaign on Sunday issued a statement of support from Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a former lieutenant governor in Maryland and a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy.

“I respect Caroline and Teddy’s decision, but I have made a different choice,” Ms. Townsend said in her statement, adding: “At this moment when so much is at stake at home and overseas, I urge our fellow Americans to support Hillary Clinton. That is why my brother Bobby, my sister Kerry, and I are supporting Hillary Clinton.”

But two years ago, Ms. Townsend’s mother, Ethel Kennedy, referred to Mr. Obama in an interview as “our next president” and likened him to her late husband.

State of the Union Speech 2008

Bush Delivers State of the Union Address Amids Challenges

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush will deliver his annual State of the Union address on Monday night against the backdrop of an economy in recession and a turbulent stock market, as well as unfinished business concerning the so-called "axis of evil."

As the economy has surpassed Iraq as the top public concern, Bush will use the address to sell Americans a 150-billion-dollar economic stimulus package that the White House hopes will stave off recession in an economy suffering from high oil prices and a housing slump.

Bush is expected to press the Democrats-controlled Congress to complete work on the package, which features tax rebates and incentives for businesses to invest in facilities and equipment.

However, some Democrats in the Senate have said they want to broaden the bill, including an unemployment benefits expansion, an increase in home heating subsidies or higher food stamp benefits. But Bush has said that they could derail the whole effort and he warned against it.

Den. Byron Dorgan, a Democrat from North Dakota, said on Saturday: "We need to do so much, much more. We need to fix the bigger economic issues that threaten our country's future."

Moreover, Bush has long wanted to make permanent the tax cuts approved early in his term, but Democrats appear to have little interest. Bush will have to secure free trade deals with Colombia, Panama and South Korea, but the trade deals have been stalled in Congress over workers' rights and other Democratic concerns, according to a report by the Washington Post.

On the diplomatic front, the "axis of evil," a phrase Bush termed six years ago, are still a source of headaches for the Bush administration: Iraq has failed to achieve political reconciliation and Iraqi security forces failed to take responsibility of their country by November 2007, although the United States dispatched about 30,000 more troops to Iraq last year.

In terms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, it failed to meet the deadline to declare its nuclear activities, and according to local media, U.S. officials worry that Pyongyang might be waiting for Bush's successor to take over in January next year, as the next U.S. president might offer it a better deal. For Iran, the United States is struggling to keep international unity on new sanctions on the Islamic country.

On the Middle East peace process, although Bush helped revive the peace process and visited the region about three weeks ago, the hope to create a Palestinian state by late 2008 still hangs in balance.

The scope of Bush's challenge was underscored by a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll earlier this month, which showed Bush's overall approval rating at 32 percent, the lowest ever, with 30 percent of the public approving his handling of Iraq. His handling of the economy rated even worse, with 28 percent approval compared with 41 percent a year ago.

Therefore, deeply unpopular Bush faces a steep challenge in persuading Americans to heed his State of the Union address on the war, economic policy or any other issues, the Washington Post report said.

The 6 Meter Club

The 6 Meter Club- Read Below

The 6 Meter Club is an elite group in the athletic community. It's made up of that select group of pole vaulters who have cleared 6.00 meters or higher.

You can find the entire list of the members of the 6 Meter Club here. Number one on the list is Sergei Bubka with a height of 615 cm. He was the first pole vaulter to break 6 meters and I believe still holds the world record in the event. He competed for the Soviet Union before it dissolved, and then for Ukraine.

I saw Sergei Bubka pole vault at an indoor track meet in the New York area many years ago... it may have been the Vitalis track meet at the Meadowlands Arena, or maybe the Mobil meet at Madison Square Garden.

His son, Sergei Bubka, Jr., is a professional tennis player, though he doesn't seem to be good enough to get into many of the major top-tier tournaments.

Skyfire Unveils New Mobile Browser for Smart Phones

Volcanic Topic: Skyfire Mobile Web Browser Review - Read Below

Today at the DEMO 08 conference, Skyfire unveiled a new mobile browser that makes browsing on a smartphone just like browsing on a PC. For the first time ever, smartphone users can experience the "real Web" to access and interact with any Web site built with any Web technology, including dynamic Flash, advanced Ajax, Java and more - at the same speeds they are accustomed to on their PC. With this free downloadable browser, users can finally watch videos from the real YouTube, stay connected with their friends on the full-feature PC versions of Facebook and MySpace, and listen to any Web music service like Last.fm. Before Skyfire, users painfully waited for these Flash and Ajax-heavy sites to render - often resulting in error messages or crashes.

"For too long consumers have been promised the are al Web' on their phone, only to be disappointed by slow rendering, error messages, no Flash support, watered down WAP pages or second-rate mobile versions of their favorite site," said Skyfire CEO Nitin Bhandari. "Skyfire has remedied those ills at a speed not seen before on the mobile platform. By extending the PC Web experience to smartphones, we fully expect Skyfire to fundamentally change the way people use their phones."

Users will not have to change their Web behavior on their smartphones because Skyfire allows them to access the same Web content, and interact with that content, exactly as they do on their PC. When users load their favorite sites, they will not encounter unrecognizable content, unfamiliar page layouts, or missing content, like they have with other mobile browsers. To date, Skyfire is the fastest loading mobile browser on the market.

"Many sophisticated technologies are launched at DEMO, and in my many years of hosting the event, it's the simple and elegant products like Skyfire which seem to have the most staying power," said Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO conferences. "Mobile browsing has not advanced at the same rate as other mobile technologies, so I am delighted to see Skyfire bring a new product to market which directly addresses one of the biggest pain points in the mobile experience today."

Skyfire has broken down the two primary barriers for Internet adoption on smartphones - speed and user experience. Recent studies point to the demand for mobile content, but the browsing experience has hindered the potential growth. As prices continue to drop, more users will adopt the full functionality offered by smartphones. According to ABI Research, 115 million smartphones were to be shipped in 2007, and that number will rise to 410 million by 2012.

"Skyfire's ability to support Flash video can give a shot in the arm to consumption of video on smartphones which currently stands at 18.4 percent," said Seamus McAteer, senior analyst, M:Metrics. "Technologies that improve the user experience of mobile applications will bolster the adoption of mobile media as it becomes increasingly mainstream."

Skyfire includes numerous features aimed at simplifying the mobile browsing experience. For example, when a user conducts a Web search from the home page, Skyfire pulls results from multiple search engines and displays the results in multiple tabs that consumers can easily navigate. In addition, users can bookmark specific locations on a Web page to get to the content that matters most to them in one click - such as stock quotes, sports scores, blog messages, etc. Skyfire's user interface features full screen navigation, thumbnail views and zooming to seamlessly resize the Web content to fit the mobile screen.

Skyfire Technology

Skyfire's patent-pending technology is the foundation of Skyfire's unique ability to support all Web technologies, both current and future, at speeds comparable to the PC. With Skyfire's proprietary technology, supporting any new Web standard becomes a seamless user experience without the need to upgrade to new releases. This technology allows Skyfire to support real Web browsing while saving precious bandwidth and reducing processing power and memory needed on the phone.

Private Beta Announced

Skyfire announced a private beta to support Windows Mobile phones, both touchscreen and non-touchscreen, in the U.S. The company will introduce a version for Symbian smartphones in the coming months and other platforms and geographies are on the product roadmap. Users can sign-up for the private beta by visiting http://www.skyfire.com/.

Skyfire was founded by Bhandari and CTO Erik Swenson in April 2006, and has been in stealth mode under the name DVC Labs until today. Based in Mountain View, Calif., the team includes engineering veterans from Adobe, Creative, eBay, Extreme Networks, MobiTV, Pinnacle, and Shutterfly.

About Skyfire

Skyfire is the creator of the Skyfire mobile browser, which extends the PC Web to mobile phones so users can experience the mobile Web exactly like they do on their PC. The company was founded in 2006 by Nitin Bhandari and Erik Swenson, who serve as CEO and CTO respectively. Skyfire is backed by Trinity Ventures and Matrix Partners and has raised $4.8 million in total funding. For more information about the company, visit http://www.skyfire.com/.

Wonderful News for Cowboy Fans

Hot News: Cowboy Fans! Here's some Wonderful News for u! Read Below.

Two bits of good news for fans of America’s Team. First, Hitler gets to wear that TO jersey with pride because the NFL’s most egotistical WR is staying in Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones plans to pay Terrell Owens’ $3 million roster bonus, which means the All-Pro wide receiver will be back for the final season of his three-year, $25 million contract.

“Yes, we are going to have Terrell back,” Jones said Tuesday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Jones added that a contract extension for Owens is something he would consider “down the line.”

Owens finished with 81 catches for 1,355 yards and a team-record 15 touchdown receptions.

Sorry Cowboy haters. TO seems to have grown up.

Want some more good news (or bad, depending on what you think of the Boys)? Tony Romo has dumped the blonde.

Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo has reportedly dumped Jessica Simpson, who was widely blamed for costing him a shot at the Super Bowl.

“Tony is now starting to blame her himself,” a pal told OK! magazine. “Before dating Jessica, he was Texas’ golden boy. Now he’s become a joke.”

A few days after the Giants bounced the Cowboys from the playoffs, Romo called the “Dukes of Hazzard” star to tell her their romance was over.

“He said he thought it was better if they went back to being friends,” a pal of hers said.

Why couldn’t they have had this discussion before the Giants debacle?

Gordon Hinckley, President of Church of Latter-Day Saints, has Passed Away

Volcanic Topic: President Gordon B. Hinckley, 1910-2008 - Read Below

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the nearly 13-million member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, died last night. He was 97.

Hinckley died at his apartment in downtown Salt Lake City ``from causes incident to age,'' according to a statement on the church's Web site.

Hinckley was ordained the 15th president of the Mormon Church in March 1995 after then-President Howard Hunter, 87, died from the effects of prostate cancer just nine months into his term, the shortest in church history. Church presidents serve until their deaths.

When Hinckley was ordained at age 84, Mormons hailed him as a man of vigor and good health. Because the church presidency falls to the longest-serving member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, most men have been elderly when they took the office.

At his ordination press conference, Hinckley made a point of standing to field questions. When asked about his health, he said, ``I spent one night in the hospital in my life. I was past 75 when that occurred.'' It was the first time in 20 years that a new Mormon president held a press conference.

By comparison, the last several Mormon Church presidents suffered poor health for much of their terms in office and Hinckley served as the de facto head of the church for his two immediate predecessors. Spencer W. Kimball, who led the church from 1973-85, had open-heart surgery, suffered a small stroke, had three brain surgeries for a hematoma and was nearly blind from glaucoma.

Ezra Taft Benson, Hunter's predecessor, and David O. McKay, president from 1951-70, were both housebound during their last years as president and rarely made public appearances.

Rising Up the Ranks

Hinckley was born on June 23, 1910, in Salt Lake City to Bryant and Ada Hinckley. His first job was as a newspaper deliverer for the Deseret News, one of Salt Lake City's dailies. He went on to get his bachelor of arts in English from the University of Utah.

After graduation, Hinckley spent two years in Great Britain as a full-time missionary for the Mormon Church before becoming an assistant to the Church Apostle who oversaw all European missions. Hinckley returned to the United States in 1935, when there were fewer than 1 million Mormons, and became the head of the church's new public relations department, a position he held for 20 years.

As public relations chief, Hinckley is credited by many Mormons for dispelling many long-standing negative stereotypes, including the now-banned practice of polygamy.

Hinckley was named in 1961 to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and in 1981 was promoted to the First Presidency, the church's highest inner circle. He served as counselor to both Benson and Hunter before he was named President of the Quorum of the Twelve.

Church Beginnings

The religion was founded by Joseph Smith in upstate New York in the early 1800s. Smith said he experienced visions from God and Jesus and angels, one of which told him of tablets buried near Smith's home.

Using ``seeing stones'' Smith translated the tablets, which told of Jesus' appearance in the Americas and from which Smith produced the Book of Mormon. The book is a combination of a standard bible and the revelations of Smith. In the Mormon Church, the Garden of Eden is located in what is today Independence, Missouri. Mormons believe their president is a living prophet, who has regular communications and revelations with God.

Presidential Accomplishments

At the press conference after he was named president, Hinckley vowed to expand the reach of the church and increase its numbers. Church membership rose by more than 3 million during his years as president, and the number of Mormon temples worldwide more than doubled.

In what some consider a turning point for the church, Hinckley told Mike Wallace on CBS's ``60 Minutes'' in 1995 that Mormons are not ``weird.''

Hinckley traveled to more foreign countries than any president in the church's more than 176-year history. He is the first church president to travel to Spain and to Africa.

In 2004, President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.

Recent Years

Hinckley battled the moniker of ``Mormon Olympics'' when the 2002 Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City. He urged his followers not to proselytize during the worldwide event and to keep a low profile, though Hinckley did carry the Olympic torch.

In 2001, Hinckley received a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat and, three days before his 95th birthday in 2005, he announced he had diabetes. Hinckley has walked with a cane since early 2001 because he said he was ``a little unsteady on my feet'' and that he suffered from vertigo.

Hinckley's wife, Marjorie Pay, preceded him in death in April 2004. They were married in 1937. Hinckley is survived by his five children.

Exorcism of Emily Rose

Exorcism of Emily Rose- Read the story below

The nineteen years old Catholic college girl Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) dies a couple of days after being submitted to an exorcism carried out by her parish priest, Church Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson). Emily believed she was possessed by six demons, and although authorized by Emily and he parents, Father Moore is accused of negligent homicide, since he had suggested Emily to disturb the use of medications for epilepsy. In order to avoid a outrage, the Archdiocese hires the successful, ambitious and agnostic attorney Erin Bruner (Laura Linney), and the prosecution assigns the religious prosecutor Ethan Thomas (Campbell Winfield Scott). Along the days, there is a battle between science and religion in the court.

Liz Cheney joins Romney Camp

Liz Cheney to back Romney: see story below

MIAMI (AP) — Liz Cheney, one of Vice President Dick Cheney's daughters, has signed onto Mitt Romney's presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser.

Cheney most recently worked in the State Department handling Middle East affairs.

While her father and President Bush have both vowed to remain neutral as their fellow Republicans battle it out for the GOP nomination, the endorsement is likely to be well received among conservatives who comprise a critical primary voting bloc in both Florida, which votes Tuesday, and the 20-odd states voting Feb. 5.

Romney has also enjoyed the support of aides with ties to the Bush family, including top assistants to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George H.W. Bush.

Liz Cheney, 41, is the elder of Dick and Lynne Cheney's two daughters. Her younger sister, Mary, has been more prominently in the public eye after revealing she is a lesbian and having a son last year with her partner, Heather Poe, despite the administration's opposition to gay marriage.

Liz Cheney, the mother of five children, said in a statement: "Throughout his campaign, (Romney) has distinguished himself as a leader who can guide our country with a clear vision for overcoming the threats we face today. ... I look forward to working with Governor Romney because he is the leader our country needs."

Romney said Liz Cheney brings the campaign "years of experience helping to formulate America's foreign policy and to advance democracy and reform in the Middle East."

Liz Cheney previously supported former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who dropped out of the race last week.

Death of Actor Christopher Allport

Hot news: Christopher Allport

TV star Allport Victim by Storm:Christopher Allport killed by the snowstorms roaring towards Southern California.

Skiing enthusiast Mr Allport, 60, was reported missing after a trio of "freak" avalanches. His body was found near the Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood.

The veteran character actor had appeared on US shows including ER, Felicity, and Matlock.

He wrote a story that appeared in the Los Angeles Times in 2004 about the pleasures of backcountry skiing.

"Any excursion into the mountains requires awareness," he wrote. "Have fun, but be careful."

Friday's avalanches also killed Michael McKay, 23, an off-duty member of the resort's ski patrol, and Darin Coffey, 31. Both were skiing out of the resort boundaries.

Avalanches are unusual in the San Gabriel Mountains, authorities said, but so was the 3ft or more of new snow that has hit the region in a matter of days this week.

Avalanches were "a freak occurrence" in the local mountains, said Pete Olson, president of Mt Baldy Ski Resorts. "We depend on snow-making, and snow-making doesn't lead to avalanches," he said. "It usually doesn't snow enough to make anything happen up here."

A missing snowboarder was found on Saturday after spending the night on the mountain. Oscar Gonzales, 24, said he got lost when he left the marked ski trails at the resort and sheltered in an old plane fuselage.

Randy Salerno

Randy Salerno

I came to WGN TV in 1994 and Randy Salerno sat me down, and shared valuable advice with me about the station, and working in Chicago. While Randy was an accomplished journalist, it is this selfless act of friendship that I will remember most.

After he left WGN, we were all still in contact with Randy. Paul and I went golfing with him and he had us laughing throughout the day.

It is awkward to be reporting his death, and yet because of his smart sense of humor, we also celebrate his life.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

We'll miss him.

Monte Carlo Fire

Volcanic Topic: Monte Carlo Fire - Read Below

A blaze scorched the top floors of the casino on the Strip this morning. No major injuries were reported and a cause has not been determined.

By Ashley Powers and Jesus Sanchez, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
3:46 PM PST, January 25, 2008

LAS VEGAS -- A large fire raced across the top of the 32-story Monte Carlo Resort & Casino this morning, sending thick plumes of smoke across the Vegas Strip.

Clark County firefighters knocked down the blaze in about an hour after it was first reported about 11 a.m., according to fire officials. The 3,000-room hotel was evacuated and no injuries, with the exception of a few minor cases of smoke inhalation, were reported in the three-alarm blaze.

The cause of the fire that scorched the top of two wings of the Y-shaped high-rise has not been determined, the Clark County Fire Department said. Welders were seen on the roof before the fire broke out, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

"As the first Clark County fire unit headed to the scene from Fire Station 11 near the Strip, they could see smoke," Fire Chief Steve Smith said in a statement. "They immediately called for more units, and we were able to get a handle on this situation very quickly."

Guests, some wearing bathrobes and towels, waited in a parking lot after being evacuated from the tower. There was no sense of panic as they were taken to nearby hotels, including New York New York and the Bellagio.

At its peak, flames licked the western-facing exterior of the hotel. The top several floors were damaged, but it was unclear if the rooms were badly burned. Ashes and chunks of what appeared to be curtains had floated to the ground. Emergency vehicles crowded the streets, which were closed to traffic.

The top floor of the hotel, which opened in 1996, contains numerous luxury suites and penthouses as well as a private lounge for those guests. It was not clear how many guests were staying at the hotel when the fire started.

Fire officials said damage estimates were not yet available. The Monte Carlo will not reopen until after building and fire inspectors have reviewed the resort, whose guests were being put up at sister properties owned by casino-hotel operator MGM Mirage.

The most serious fire at a Las Vegas hotel took place on the morning of Nov. 21, 1980, at the former MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Eighty-seven people died from the blaze and almost 800 were injured. It was the deadliest fire in Nevada history and at the time was the second deadliest fire in U.S. history.

Most of the deaths were attributed to smoke inhalation.

More than 5,000 people were in the 26-story MGM Grand luxury hotel when the fire broke out. Most of the damage occurred in the casino on the second floor and its adjacent restaurants.

That fire was caused by an electrical ground fault inside a wall soffit. The wiring inside the wall was used to power a refrigeration unit for a food display cabinet in a deli.

Times staff writer Michael Muskal contributed to this report.
