Seton Hall Campus on Lock Down Following Shooting - Read Below
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A friend of a Seton Hall University student was hospitalized in fair condition after being found on the school's South Orange campus with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night.
University officials placed the campus under lockdown for nearly two hours as police responded to the incident, which happened at about 8:30 p.m. Students were told to stay indoors and entrances to the campus were blocked.
Paul Loriquet, spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, said the man, identified as Anthony Papalia, 22, of Aberdeen, had gone to the campus to visit a female student.
Preliminary reports indicate the man was inside a vehicle near the Xavier Hall dormitory when he shot himself in the stomach.
Papalia was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where he was in fair condition late Monday night, said hospital spokesman Rogers Ramsey.
It was not immediately known what prompted the shooting, although Loriquet said there may have been a dispute between the parties.
